As a child I had a pretty bland palate. I loved all things sweet and chocolate, and cheese and mayonnaise sandwiches.
As an adult, my palate has expanded exponentially. I enjoy a variety of foods, from Mexican to Moroccan, Chinese, Thai, Lebanese, Russian cuisine, sushi, and sauerbraten. I have been blessed by many capable cooks in my life, and learned a few things from them too. But there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can compare to my Mom’s chicken ‘n dumplings.
It cannot be just any chicken ‘n dumplings. Hands down, none can approach the smell, the taste, the soothing warm comfort of this delectable dish as prepared by my mother. I have never been able to replicate it. But Mom came, and in the same kitchen where I have attempted to recreate it and failed, with the same spices and ingredients, she cooked up just what the heart wanted.
Thanks Mom. I wish I could give you as good a Mother’s Day gift as you just gave me.
